Freeform’s New Teen Thriller Series ‘Cruel Summer’ Will Premiere This April
Freeform will be introducing their audiences to yet, another striking series this Spring 2021. The psychological thriller will take place over the course of three years during the warm months of summer set in the 1990’s. The teen mystery will follow a story about the mysterious disappearance of a popular girl and a nerdy wannabe cool girl who becomes the most despised human being in America.
Freeform has unveiled their new psychological thriller series Cruel Summer premiering April 20 along with the likes of Former 7th Heaven Star, Jessica Biel who will be executive producer. The mystery series will revolve around two young women who at first are polar opposites: Kate Wallis, the popular girl and a nerdy girl, Jeanette Turner.
The story will take place in a small Texas town during the nostalgic years of 1993-1995 when a popular teen (Kate) is seemingly abducted and a shy, awkward girl (Jeanette) who later becomes the most popular girl in town to the most despised person in America by the Summer of 1995. The stories will unfold through shifting points of view and focus on how a girl can go from being undetected amongst her peers to a nationwide target.
The upcoming thriller series is created and written by Bert V. Royal where The Sinner star, Jessical biel will serve as executive producer. According to Deadline, Biel mentioned “This is a project that I would have wanted to do if I was their age. I would have loved to play one of the characters.”
Biel also discussed that her past experiences onset the teen drama, 7th Heaven helped her become a great support system and more involved in the development.
On March 18, Biel took to Instagram to share the official trailer of the upcoming thriller by writing, “Excited to release the full trailer of @CruelSummer!”
Cruel Summer will premiere with a two-hour event which will consist of two episodes, “Happy Birthday Jeanette Turner” (Ep. 1) and “A Smashing Good Time” (Ep. 2). Both on April 20 starting at 9pm on Freeform and will also be available the next day on Hulu.
