Zendaya Is Voicing Lola Bunny in ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’
Zendaya has joined the Looney Tunes squad and LeBron James in the highly-anticipated sports comedy Space Jam: A New Legacy. The exciting news comes just a few days after the official trailer dropped on Saturday morning. Zendaya will star alongside LeBron James and Don Cheadle.
Malcolm D. Lee, who will be directing the sequel, is looking forward to fans seeing a more developed Lola. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lee expressed his concerns over Lola Bunny in the Michael Jordan-led film. Lee states, “Lola was not politically correct, This is a kid’s movie, why is she in a crop top? It just felt unnecessary, but at the same time there’s a long history of that in cartoons.” He elaborates on the character of Lola Bunny, “We reworked a lot of things, not only her look, like making sure she had an appropriate length on her shorts and was feminine without being objectified, but gave her a real voice, for us, it was, let’s ground her athletic prowess, her leadership skills, and make her as full a character as the others.” Lee wants Lola Bunny to be reflected as a strong, authentic female character.

To cast Zendaya as Lola Bunny is a no-brainer. In March, Zendaya had been awarded the SeeHer Award, which recognizes authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment pool and is given to women in film who aim to push past boundaries and defy stereotypes. Other than being an actress, she is also an activist, constantly using her platform to amplify the voices of those that feel their voices do not matter.
@Zendaya thank you for inspiring me in ways you never imagined. You inspire me to be a strong woman, to overcome shyness to make my dreams come true, and everything I have to do, be done giving the best ❤
