President Joe Biden revealed an initial set of executive actions on gun control following recent acts of gun violence in the United States. Among those announcements was funding towards intervention programs in communities with high violence rates and increased restriction on ghost guns that make the aim more accurate. President Biden also encouraged Congress to reform gun legislation like re-enacting an assault weapons ban.

The announcement is a direct result of the devastating mass shootings that have taken place over the course of the past couple of weeks. The suspect in the Boulder, Colorado mass shooting that killed ten people reportedly used such a stabilizing brace, which explains the restriction on ghost guns.

President Biden also wants to require anyone who wishes to purchase a gun to have a thorough background check and put serial numbers of parts of the guns. The Justice Department hasn’t reported on firearms trafficking since 2000, so they will now start having annual reports.

The department will also draft a template for law enforcement and family members to point out “red flags.” This allows them to request court orders to remove a weapon from people who threaten the safety of themselves or others.

The President makes it clear that these regulations don’t infringe on the second amendment, but will be in place to ensure the safety of everyone. Unfortunately, many families have been affected by gun violence and President Biden recognizes and understands that these loved ones have suffered tremendous pain as a result.

He emphasized that gun violence in the United States is an “epidemic” and an “international embarrassment.” This clear and concise outline will help regulate the distribution of guns and prevent gun violence in the future.
