Born Earl Simmons, DMX dominated the music industry in the late 90s and early 2000s following the release of his hit single “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem.” The song was featured on his debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, which rose to the top of the charts. He is the only rapper to have this first five albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard’s Hot 200 chart.

DMX gave hardcore rap a new meaning and his distinct voice helped him stand out among his peers. His fans loved the rawness and vulnerability he put into his songs. He rapped about his issues with poverty, addiction, and mental health in a way that others had not done. Many related to his struggles and praised him for having the courage to share his story.

Back in 2019, the DMX Challenge went viral on social media, where famous Black women showcased their versatile looks to “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem.” Two decades later, the iconic rapper’s music was still making an impact, even on younger generations.

Although known for his high energy, DMX was also deeply spiritual and devoted to his faith. Those that knew him are sharing their fondest memories that highlight the softer side behind his hardcore raps. Gabrielle Union, a longtime friend of DMX, posted a moving tribute to the late rapper on Instagram. “I am forever grateful for your joy, your laugh, your protection all these years, and your hugs anytime I’ve seen you,” she shared.

In a statement announcing his passing, DMX’s family thanked everyone for their outpouring of love and support. They called him “a warrior who fought till the very end,” and said, “his iconic legacy will live on forever.” He passed away at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side.

Many were praying for DMX to pull through and the world is saddened to have lost a legend so soon. We will continue honoring his legacy and remembering him for his spirit and music that touched and inspired millions.
