Sour is supposedly a telling of the trials and tribulations of heartbreak. The supporting tracks “driver’s license” and “deja vu” were tellings of post-breakup feelings. “Deja vu” explores the memories of what happens in a relationship and the similarities she noticed with the next person. “Driver’s license” explores the sad feelings of fully realizing that the person is no longer in your life.
The cover for Sour is a lilac purple with Rodrigo adorned in heart, butterfly, and star stickers. The track list is shown in a silver balloon, surrounded by similar stickers on Rodrigo’s face. Next to the balloon is Rodrigo’s hand with a safety pin.
She appears to utilize a mix of folk-pop tones and alt-rock sounds. Each song, supporting a versatile mood. Her ideal genre is not just one, rather she hopes that her music comes in a variety.
Rodrigo stated to Nylon, “I want it to be super versatile. My dream is to have it be an intersection between mainstream pop, folk music, and alternative rock. I love the songwriting, and the lyricism, and the melodies of folk music. I love the tonality of alt-rock.”
Eighteen-year-old Rodrigo seems to be no stranger to hit singles. Both of her singles, “driver’s license” and “deja vu” have debuted in the top ten of the Billboard Music Charts. This is a first not only for Rodrigo, but in history.
