Derek Chauvin has been found guilty of the murder of George Floyd, a Black man in America. Last May in Minneapolis, former police officer Chauvin barbarically and forcefully knelt on Floyd’s neck and ignored his cry for help of not being able to breathe. This lasted for over nine minutes and resulted in his painful death and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement.

While the jury was concealed and unreachable from the world to make their decision, President Joe Biden confirmed he met and spoke with Floyd’s family. He also prayed that the court would come to the one right verdict in the name of justice. He alluded to the fact that Chauvin should be held accountable for Floyd’s soul and family can rest peacefully.

Many people anxiously awaited the decision in the streets of Minneapolis. It was clear to the jury that Chauvin knew what he was doing and didn’t care enough about Floyd’s life to stop. There was overwhelming evidence against him. After the jury’s decision was released, a sign of relief was felt all over the world as they began to cheer at Chauvin’s guilty conviction. He was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.

After Floyd’s death, understandable anger and sadness broke out across America as Black people united and mourned his tragic death. People joined hands in support to amplify their voices as they protested and shed light on police brutality and racism. This victory should be celebrated, but the same momentum needs to be carried over to other cases and individuals, like Daunte Wright, so they can also receive justice.
