Whoopi Goldberg Has Powerful Black and Female-Led Superhero Movie in the Works
Whoopi Goldberg revealed that she is in the process of writing a film focusing on an older Black woman acquiring superhero powers. Goldberg is arguably one of the most talented stars in the industry, as she is one of the 16 people in the coveted EGOT club. After achieving many accolades for her acting abilities, she is now beginning a new chapter, penning a superhero screenplay. It is simply time to focus on an older Black female superhero.
Goldberg spoke to Variety over Zoom, where she reflected on her career. She reminisced about her Oscar win for best-supporting actress for her role as psychic Oda Mae in Ghost. She thanked her co-stars, Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. This Oscar win had been so historic, as she became the first Black woman to win in over 50 years. The romantic drama film has made a huge impact in the entertainment industry, and it is all because of the chemistry between Goldberg, Moore, and Swayze.

Goldberg had fun discussing her memorable roles from Oda Mae in Ghost to her role as Celie in The Color Purple. She revealed her upcoming plans now include screenwriting. She tells Variety, “Since I was a little kid, I’ve been obsessed with superheroes. They’re all saving the earth all the time. But do you know who’s really going to save the earth? Old Black women.” She discusses her love of superheroes from a young age and really wants to write a film that shows that representation she needed to see growing up.
