Netflix Set to Release Mini-Series Based on True Story About Faux Russian Heiress Who Scammed NYC Elites
Shonda Rhimes’ newest upcoming project, Inventing Anna, will be based on the impostor Russian heiress, Anna Delvey. The story will revolve around a journalist who investigates the notorious case that unlocks the antics of the legendary impostor who stole millions from New York City’s elites. The mini-series will premiere on Netflix.
The highly-anticipated limited series, Inventing Anna is adapted from Jessica Pressler’s 2018 article, How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People from New York magazine.
The riveting article tells the true story of Russian-born Anna Sorokin who had rebranded herself under the name, Anna Delvey. The con-artist posed as a wealthy heiress who scammed her way into New York City’s lavish lifestyle while rubbing shoulders with socialites and other members of the city’s elite.
The young and aspiring “It Girl” conned her newfound rich friends and elites out of thousands of dollars by using the “I Owe You” card. Due to her antics, her former friend, Rachel Williams was once stuck with a $60K bill on a luxurious trip to Morocco. Eventually, the false promises began to catch up with the faux Russian heiress to the point that police authorities became involved. Apparently, this is not even half of the damage Ms. Sorokin had successfully made; she was then later found guilty of second-degree larceny.
The story was also captured on HBO Max docu-series, Generation Hustle which covers some of the most recent wild scams of the past decade. The jaw-dropping episode ran as an hour-long standalone episode called “Anna Delvey Takes Manhattan.”
In a late interview from prison during her conviction, the 28-year-old said to the New York Times, “I’d be lying to you and to everyone else and to myself if I said I was sorry for anything. I regret the way I went about certain things. My motive was never money… I was power-hungry.”
The drama mini-series, Inventing Anna will be starring Emmy award winner, Julia Garner (Anna), Laverne Cox (Kacy Duke), Katie Lowes (Rachel Williams), and a rather fully stacked cast. The show will consist of 10 episodes and will be executive produced by The Devil Wears Prada‘s, David Frankel.
Production for the limited series has already begun in New York City. However, there has not been a set release date as of yet. Follow their official Instagram to stay updated on the premiere date.
