“I didn’t say much to Selena because I wasn’t a celebrity, and I just saw her and said hello and kept it moving,” Beyoncé stated in an MTV Tr3s interview. “Growing up in Texas, I heard her on the radio, and I think listening to her album, even though I didn’t know exactly what she was singing, it helped me in the studio with my pronunciation.”

Beyoncé looked up to Quintanilla and referred to her as an inspiration and legend. Both singers were Texas-born and raised. Just like Quintanilla was a source of inspiration for Beyoncé, Beyoncé has since been an inspiration for many young Texans and people all over the world.

“She was so talented,” Beyoncé continued in the MTV Tr3s interview. “I’m very happy that, even though she didn’t know who I was, I’m still so excited that I got that opportunity.”

Quintanilla was fatally shot at 23 years old by the founder of her fan club and manager of her boutiques, Yolanda Saldívar, on March 31, 1995. It has been 26 years since her death, but her memory continues to live on through role models and great artists like Beyoncé.
