On Monday, May 10, Olivia Rodrigo announced via Instagram that she will be dropping her new single, ‘Good 4 U’ on Friday, May 14, ahead of her performance on Saturday Night Live on May 15.

The new song will be the third single off of her debut album, Sour. The 18-year-old pop star released her record-breaking premiere single, ‘driver’s license,’ on January 8, 2021. The song broke countless records, including “Most Streams in a Day for a Non-Holiday Song” on January 11 on Spotify, only to break its own record the following day. According to Billboard, ‘driver’s license’ spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the longest-running No. 1 hit on global charts.

Rodrigo’s second single, ‘Deja Vu,’ debuted at No. 8 on the Hot 100, making her the first artist to have her first two singles go straight into the top 10. Both singles received massive attention on TikTok, further contributing to the success.

Rodrigo, best known for her starring role on the Disney+ original series, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, has a close friendship with and similar music style as Taylor Swift. Both women have received sexist criticism for “only writing songs about boys.” Similar to Swift, Rodrigo’s songs are often emotional ballads about relationships. Rodrigo defended her artistic decisions in an interview with The Guardian.

“I’m a teenage girl, I write about stuff that I feel really intensely — and I feel heartbreak and longing really intensely — and I think that’s authentic and natural…I don’t really understand what people want me to write about; do you want me to write a song about income taxes? How am I going to write an emotional song about that?”

Despite her young age, Rodrigo is quickly becoming one of the most influential pop musicians of the generation.

Rodrigo’s album, Sour, will drop on May 21 and feature an array of original music. Find her music on all platforms and check out Saturday Night Live on May 15 for her debut performance of ‘Good 4 U.’
