David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston on Their Real-Life ‘Friends’ Chemistry
David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston revealed on Friends: The Reunion that Ross and Rachel’s first kiss on the show was inspired by the actors’ real-life crushes on each other. The unscripted, emotional reunion premiered on HBO Max on May 27.
For the first time in 16 years, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, and Matt LeBlanc reunited at Stage 24 of the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, CA, for Friends: The Reunion. The stars sat down with host James Corden to celebrate Friends and relive their favorite moments.
Per Popsugar, David Schwimmer revealed in the reunion, “The first season, I had a major crush on Jen.” Jennifer Aniston quickly responded, “It was reciprocated.” She remembered thinking it would “Be such a bummer” if their first kiss was on national television. However, the actress said, “Sure enough, the first time we kissed was in that coffee shop. We just channeled all of our adoration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel.”
Schwimmer remembers, “At some point, we were both crushing hard on each other, but it was like two ships passing. One of us was always in a relationship, and we never crossed that boundary.” The stars never acted on their true feelings in real life. When Schwimmer recalled cuddling with Aniston on the couch during rehearsal breaks, he asked, “How did everyone not know we were crushing on each other?” But co-stars Matthew Perry and Courtney Cox said, “We knew.”
Friends fans showed their excitement about the former romance between Schwimmer and Aniston on Twitter.
how do people expect me to be fine after today when I’ll be forever carrying the knowledge of David and Jennifer were crushing on each other and reflecting that energy into Ross and Rachel? #FriendsReunion pic.twitter.com/t6v9iSzAyw

The fact that David and Jen were crushing hard on each other, and did not do anything about it, and kissed for first time on national television in that coffee house, my heart never went out for Ross and Rachel like that before.#FriendsReunion
