Almost a decade ago, Cody Simpson was gearing up to perform in front of thousands of screaming fans and aiming for gold records. Now, Simpson is looking to receive a different kind of gold—an Olympic gold medal.

In Simpson’s GQ feature, he broke down the timeline from pop star to potential Olympic swimmer. In 2012, he just released his first album Paradise, and that was just one of the many events Simpson had going. During the same year, Simpson signed with Scooter Braun, known for signing Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. The young star also performed on the Today Show, won a Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Aussie Superstar, and completed a third tour in the United States.

The 24-year-old looks back on his teen superstar days with a cool, calm, and collected tone. Although it was overwhelming, it made him more mature for his age. In the same GQ interview, Simpson stated, “Doing these massive stadiums and meeting all these people that you’d see on the covers of magazines, I had to adjust very quickly to that life. I was so naive to it all, so I was just along for the ride… I had to grow up very fast.”

Although Simpson was in the spotlight at a vulnerable age, he was backed by discipline from years before as a competitive swimmer. As a young teen, Simpson was a multiple-time national swim champion, and these accolades caught the attention of many Australian coaches. Coaches told him to consider the 2016 Rio Olympics, which would’ve made him a 19-year-old competitor.

Things seem to be coming full circle for Simpson as he has recently announced that he is training for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Currently, he is getting ready for the Australian Swimming Trials, which will take place in mid-June. In April, Simpson shocked many when he put on a stunning performance despite missing out on the 50m butterfly final by 0.02 seconds.

Fans will be able to watch Simpson’s journey in the Amazon Prime docuseries Head Above Water. The docuseries features Simpson alongside Ian Thorpe, Bronte Campbell, and Kyle Chalmers as they embark on their Olympic journeys.

Head Above Water will premiere on June 4 on Amazon Prime Video.
