Demi Lovato Opens up to Jane Fonda About Their Decision to Come Out as Non-Binary
In a powerful discussion with Jane Fonda, Demi Lovato revealed why it took them so long to share that they are non-binary. Lovato appeared on Fonda’s “Fire Drill Fridays,” which had been largely inspired by climate activist Greta Thunberg’s “School Strike for Climate Fridays.” Apart from being one of the most successful actresses of all time, Fonda prides herself through her work as an activist. Lovato had been the perfect guest, as they have also had a successful career as an actor and singer. Lovato is also an activist, where they launched the podcast “4D with Demi,” where they made the announcement that they are non-binary.
On May 19, Lovato posted a message to their 106M Instagram followers that they will officially be changing their pronouns to they/them after years of healing and self-reflection. Lovato made the disclaimer that they are certainly not an expert but have hopes that sharing their story can inspire others to come forward and share their true selves with those that love and care for them.
Fast forward to May 28, as Lovato was Fonda’s guest star on “Fire Drill Fridays.” Fonda asked Lovato about their gender expression, more specifically, how patriarchy affects society. Lovato gave a huge smile and revealed, “If I had listened to the patriarchy, my life would have never changed, my gender, my pronouns would have never changed. I would have probably been married to a man, with kids, doing the thing that I was raised to believe that I should do. Growing up in Dallas, Texas, in the South, being Christian, there was a lot of norms that were already pushed on to me when it came to sexuality and gender, and I’m a very fluid person.”
Lovato shared that they had often felt confused, as they had constantly been labeled and conditioned to think a certain way. This is a harmful narrative, and it is something Lovato desperately wants to change.
That conversation was so incredible. Ugh I love Demi and Jane so muchhhh.

There’s no one “right way” to be queer, trans and/or non-binary.

Whether it’s Elliot Page or Demi Lovato or Sam Smith, the more different high-profile folks who come out and express it in different ways, the more role models kids will have to point to and say “that’s like me!”
