Sung Kang Addresses the Impacts of the #JusticeForHan
Sung Kang explains the #JusticeforHans movement and how that impacts his character. He also spoke on how Jason Statham’s character, Deckard Shaw, is the reason for the hashtag.
When the first trailer for Fast and Furious 9 came out in January, fans noticed a unique character. Han Lue is back, and there is a reason behind it.
In a recent interview with People, Sung Kang, who plays Han Lue, explains this decision. People Magazine interviewed him in honor of the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. According to Kang, as an Asian, to have the opportunity to be in Fast and Furious was life-changing.
#F9 had me smiling like a straight man at a sportball gathering.

It’s all wink wink, nudge nudge, vroom vroom and I loved. The over-the-top set pieces you want + some old-school F1-2 vibes.

Another character Kang interprets in Better Luck Tomorrow is the inspiration for Han. During the 15 anniversary of the film, the director Justin Lin, who directed the franchise and this movie, heard a fan saying “Justice for Hans” for the first time. The impact was massive, as they realized the story left a hole in Han’s storyline.
Lin, who is directing Fast and Furious 9, decided to bring back Han for closure. When asked Kang if he was aware of Lin’s plan to bring Han back, he stated, “It was wasn’t like this surprise, it was more like, “Hey, we get an opportunity to go play again and we get to see our old friends.”
Better Luck Tomorrow’s Han, played by Sung Kang, is indeed the same Han who appears in the Fast & Furious franchise, thanks to Justin Lin. #BetterLuckTomorrow is canonically where Han’s story begins. pic.twitter.com/KomFWjO0rW

Fans called for justice to Kangs’ character as he was loved by many. Later, we discovered in the seventh movie of the franchise that Lue was killed by Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham. After that, fans believed that Hans deserved a better ending. Instead, Shaw became part of the Toretto family, and that was outraging for fans.
In the interview, Kang explained, “We were always talking about it, going where could Han continue in that universe? We were also okay with just letting Han sleep. It’s been a wonderful exit. He died multiple times, come on. Enough, right? But I think just the way the stars were aligned, the fans felt like there was some type of closure that was not given to them and there was this injustice.”
“We’ll have explanations in Fast 9. … Everybody loves Jason, so why not, right? I’ve got to include him, right? Hey, if I can die 10 times, he can turn into a good guy from a bad guy.” said Kang about Statham’s come back in the ninth movie. #JusticeForHan is what every fan has been waiting for, and it is finally here.

After the third Fast and Furious movie, Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, when Han Lue first appears, fans instantly fell in love with him. However, Lue was killed off in the same film. He is part of the Toretto family in Fast and Furious four through six as a character.
In addition, in a poster for the new movie Han appears with the quote “Justice is coming” above him.

I will continue to support you pic.twitter.com/BrUfWaznYk
“It’s a course correction of always respecting the fan base and the audience. You can’t just dismiss that inner tension, right?” said Kang about the poster.
A very simple question not answered in @TheFastSaga #f9

How in hell did mr nobody save han? What kind if magic was that? #JusticeForHan #FastAndFurious9 #Fast9 pic.twitter.com/4pZSljwHEq
It is very impactful to bring Hans back. Kang is the only Asian actor and one of the few in the entire franchise to have stayed on for longer than Dominic Toretto, the lead. With that, the franchise shows diversity within the cast.
Fast and Furious 9: The Fast Saga was pushed back due to COVID-19 and will release on June 25. Be sure to check out the official trailer below.
