Saweetie, 27-year-old rapper and singer, gave fans a look into her personal thoughts on her music career in an interview with Refinery29. Additionally, Saweetie discussed her plans outside of music to give back to minority communities.

In the interview, Saweetie stated, “During the pandemic, I realized I had to take hold of my creativity again. I was just working so much that I was allowing other people to execute my creativity.” The creative direction others were seeing for Saweetie did not satisfy her. Unfortunately, many could not picture what was happening in her head when it came to working on the set of music videos. Reclaiming power was the only option for Saweetie because, through her unique content, the rapper is able to connect with fans. Ultimately, Saweetie is looking to enjoy her time while creating music.

Now, Saweetie is taking full control of her art by including sketches that others think are over the top. For example, at the beginning of Saweetie’s “Best Friend” music video featuring Doja Cat, the two artists act out a sketch where they are uninterested in a “fake woke” man who approaches them. Many believed this wouldn’t be interpreted well by her audience, but Saweetie assured them that she knows what her fans are looking for – and she was right. Not only does the music video have over 130 million views, but the sound of “Best Friend” has also become popular on TikTok with over 850 thousand videos, to which Saweetie commented, “I can’t be blind to the fact that TikTok does catapult songs.”

Aside from Saweetie’s music career, she is planning to start a non-profit called Icy Baby Foundation with her grandmother, Roxane Harper. Saweetie explained, “I grew up watching my grandmother run a non-profit organization, going to high schools, going into communities, trying to give back and really uplift those minority communities.” Now, the 27-year-old rapper is trying to do the same.
