Barack and Michelle Obama tease their latest project, We The People, a Netflix original animated series teaching kids about government. Over the course of 10 episodes, guest stars will perform three-minute musical history lessons similar to the classic Schoolhouse Rock! videos.

What are the rights of citizens in the modern world? The Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions will use We the People to explore everything from voting rights to taxes to citizenship.

“The show combines music and animation to educate a new generation of young Americans about the power of the people,” a description for the show reads.

Audiences will learn about government through original musical numbers. Artists involved include Janelle Monáe, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bebe Rexha, Brandi Carlile, Adam Lambert, H.E.R., and Cordae. National Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman will speak on civic duty, just as she did on Inauguration Day. Robert and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Daveed Diggs, and Brittany Howard are all featured musicians in the series.

We the People will combine music, with experimental animation techniques to make learning civic duty that much more exciting. Each episode of the series centers around a different issue, with a new artist lyrically narrating a modern political matter.

“Can I make a difference if I don’t even know how?” H.E.R sings in the song “Changes” for the trailer.

We the People’s tracklist includes songs like “American Citizen,” “Taxes,” and “Speak Your Mind,” performed by individual artists for each episode. In one final anthem, everyone comes together for the title song, “We the People.”

The talent-packed series produced by Barack and Michelle Obama was created by Chris Nee (Doc McStuffins). This may be a kid’s show, but who doesn’t need a little reminder of their rights from their favorite singers, poets, and politicians? We the People will be streaming on Netflix this Independence Day, July 4.
