Fans of Shazam! were thrilled to see Zachary Levi back in his costume in a teaser posted by Director David F. Sandberg. Filming of the sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is taking longer than expected. But it appears that production is underway for the DC Universe movie set for release in the summer of 2023.

“Why’s it so dark? Probably would have been a good idea to have, like, one light on,” Levi’s character asks himself in the teaser.

When Shazam! first hit theaters in 2019, audiences fell in love with Levi’s charming smile and comedic approach to life. The inspiring superhero tale showed us that there is a hero within everyone, including wise-cracking teenager Billy Batson (Asher Angel). Billy transforms into the titular character, Shazam (Levi), and must fight evil forces with the help of his foster brother.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods once again centers around Billy, who must harness his powers as Shazam to fight a team of evil forces introduced to us in the first movie. But with the latest added cast members, it appears that Shazam will have more help than ever. Little else is known about the sequel, but fans are enjoying any pieces of information they can get.

The teaser comes hours after Shazam’s new red-and-gold suit reveal. The revamped look includes a smaller lightning bolt at the center of the outfit and a gold band around his waist. It’s a different kind of look for an unsuspecting hero.

Alongside Levi and Angel, Ross Butler, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Grace Fulton, Marta Milans, Ian Chen will be returning for the sequel. Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren are the latest actors to join the already stacked lineup. Additionally, Rachel Zeglar will be joining the cast following her starring role in West Side Story.

After raking in nearly $149 million during Shazam!’s initial release, the film’s producer, Warner Bros promptly began working on a sequel. Although filming has proven to be difficult due to COVID protocols on set, Shazam! Fury of the Gods seems to be underway. Be sure to follow Zachary Levi and David F. Sandberg on Twitter for updates and sneak peeks.
