Selena Gomez Opens up About Her Struggles With Body Image in a New Interview
Recently, “Vulnerable” singer, RARE makeup founder, and fashion icon Selena Gomez has opened up about her struggles with her fluctuating weight and accepting her ever-changing body.
Gomez, 28, sat down with Vogue, where she discussed fashion, her journey to self-acceptance, and revealing her moments of insecurity. Her first moment of insecurity arose during the 2015 Met Gala.
“I fluctuate a lot with my weight. And I remember this night specifically, I didn’t feel good about my body,” she said. “So what was really amazing was that I actually got a chance to work on the dress that fit my body.”

Selena Gomez makes me so happy as someone who also fluctuates with my weight and has a round shaped face because she’s been one of my biggest crushes for years and years. Like she’s gorgeous. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with how she looks.

From there, her insecurities began to snowball. During the same year as the Met Gala, Gomez was diagnosed with Lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, for which she needed chemotherapy treatments and medication. It also caused her to undergo an emergency kidney transplant in 2017, Business Insider reported. In 2019, Gomez expressed another moment of insecurity and how she tackled it during the premiere of The Dead Don’t Die.
“This was also a moment in my life where I had fluctuated in weight,” she said. “I’m very honest with the people on my team, so I didn’t want to wear anything tight. And then I tried this dress on, and I felt so beautiful.”
In addition to health problems, people’s comments about Gomez’s weight only caused her self-esteem to plummet even more.
“It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life – it depends on even the month, to be honest,” she said of her weight fluctuation in 2019. “So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. And in reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends on what’s happening in my life.”
It’s taken years for Gomez to accept herself. Fashion is what helped her to embrace her body and weight fluctuation.
“I think that we came together and built something really beautiful and something that fit me really well,” she continued. “That was one of the moments where I was like, ‘I don’t have to be that 19-year-old body shape anymore, because I’m not.’”
