However, people wondered if this was a ploy to appeal to the LGBTQ+ community. It’s not a stunt to have more diversity. In fact, both in the Marvel comics and Norse mythology, the trickster god’s gender has always been fluid, and has the ability to shapeshift into anything he wants.
Always been a fan of Loki.

Way before the character was in Marvel movies. (Even had a kitty by the same name.)
There’s something about that mischief..hence being a diety o’ mine.
With the character being gender fluid there’s even more reasons to love Loki. 💚
By gosh they did it…they actually recognized Loki as gender fluid. That’s a win for comic fans but more importantly the LGBT+ community during Pride Month! Way to go Marvel!!! https://t.co/VCE9RTn5Pl

It was in 2014’s Original Sin that Loki’s sex fluidity was revealed. According to Inverse, Loki and Thor stumbled into a female-run society that Loki transformed into a woman named “Lady Loki” to blend in. This isn’t a disguise; just another form of Loki. Further, into the same comic, Loki’s fluidity was confirmed again by Odin, the king of Asgard.
“My children. My son and my daughter and my child who is both.”
Furthermore, Loki’s fluidity dates all the way back in mythology. The characters in Thor are based on the gods in Norse mythology. Loki is a trickster god who has shapeshifting abilities. According to Light at the Crossroads, Loki has been both a mother and a father in their time, as a masterful shapeshifter who transitions between the sexes as it suits them. Like the comics, Loki and Thor search for Thor’s missing hammer, which happens in female society. Loki turns into a woman and poses as Thor’s handmaiden.
So, Loki has always been gender-fluid. Director Kate Herron, writer Michael Waldron and Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston, have kept this secret under wraps for ten years. It was a long time in the making. Hiddleson couldn’t contain his excitement about Loki’s fluidity announcement.
“It’s always been there in the mythology. It’s been in the comics as long as, I think, the run of publishing within Marvel, over 60-plus years,” Hiddleston shared with Reuters, “Loki, as a character, has had such a broad identity. He’s always been a character that you could never put in a box, that you could never pin down, and I was really pleased that we were able to touch on that in the series.”
