Robin Thede & London Hughes to Star in ‘Perfect Strangers’ Reboot

Warner Media

Actress Robin Thede and comedian London Hughes have been cast in the HBO Max reboot of the hit 80s show Perfect Strangers. In addition to starring in the series, Thede is slated to be a writer and producer of the show through an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.

Perfect Strangers centers around Deja (Thede) and Poppy (Hughes). According to Deadline, the two young women discover they are half-sisters after inheriting a small apartment above a trap yoga studio in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. However, Deja and Poppy are polar opposites and must learn to work and live together.”.

Thede and Executive Producer Robert L. Boyett will be loosely basing the reboot on the original Perfect Strangers, which ran for eight seasons on ABC from 1986-1993. The sitcom followed the lives of distant cousins Larry Appleton and Balki Barktokomous, who move in together despite personal and cultural differences.

Perfect Strangers is one of many ongoing projects for Thede through her new production company, For Better or Words. The company aims to showcase diverse stories that go against traditional narratives. Most recently, A Black Lady Sketch Show was renewed for a third season on HBO Max, which Thede created and stars in.

“So excited to develop, write and star in this modern story of two Black women (one is American and the other is British) who are three-dimensional, hilarious, and real,” Thede posted to Instagram. “The format of a reboot gives us a chance to create dynamic new characters in a familiar framework.”

Hughes will star alongside Thede in the reboot, bringing in a diverse British perspective to the series. The comedian and writer could be seen most recently in her Netflix special To Catch a D-ck. Hughes’s past credits also include Laughter Shock and History of Swear Words.

We may not be getting a Perfect Strangers reboot for some time. While we wait, be sure to check out the latest season of A Black Lady Sketch Show on HBO Max and get familiar with Thede’s work.
