The Devil Wears Prada cast shared their experience filming and the impacts of their roles in a 15-year anniversary interview.

The iconic and timeless film The Devil Wears Prada was released 15-years ago, and the cast celebrated with an interview. So, they reunited with Entertainment Weekly to give insights into their characters’ impacts and personal lives during the shootings.

Not only does the film show emblematic outfits, but it is also very empowering. The cast admits the importance of seeing a powerful female running the magazine. Hence, they wanted to make changes with Miranda Priestly being the girl boss.

Furthermore, all the stars divulged how crucial it was to portray a woman in a position of power. Streep shared her contentment with men identifying themselves with a woman. “This is the first movie [where] men have come up to me and said, “I know how you felt; I have a company, and nobody understands me. It’s really hard.” It’s the hardest thing in the world for a man to feel his way through to the protagonist of the film if it’s a woman.”

Emily Blunt, who plays Emily Charlton, compliments how Miranda changed the narrative for the image of a woman in power. “[Miranda] gives us a character whom a lot of us can aspire to,” she stated, “not have to contort and dance to get your point across without hurting or offending anybody, which I think men have a much easier time with.”

The Devil Wears Prada is a feminist movie that shows the breakage of the glass ceiling. It inspires young girls to aim for positions that rarely seem viable. “Our society has been conditioned to see the world through men’s eyes, in cinema and literature, and this started to make that change.” Stanley Tucci, who played Nigel, said.

Anne Hathway was not the first choice for the role. Instead, her character was supposed to go to Rachel McAdams. But, Hathway was eager to get the part, and she played Andrea Stach and nailed it. Hathaway admits that the movie “was about a subject that I take very seriously but in such a wonderfully joyful and lighthearted way.” She knew the influence this movie would have.

As for the boss, Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, became an inspiration for many. Although, Streep did have a tough time playing the powerful Miranda. “It was horrible! I was [miserable] in my trailer. I could hear them all rocking and laughing. I was so depressed! She claims, “I said, “Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss!” That’s the last time I ever attempted a Method thing!” For this role, she used the personification of her character as a technique, the method acting. Therefore, she stayed in character even behind the scenes.

Sadly, according to David Frankel, there will never be a sequel because they “already told the story”. But, the movie inspired a musical.
