Maisie Peters, 21, is getting ready to release her first LP on August 27 titled You Signed Up For This. Along with the news, Peters also announced that she is signing with Ed Sheeran’s label Gingerbread Man Records. For Peters, this is a huge step in her career at such a young age. In fact, Peters was the youngest artist to write and curate a soundtrack for Apple TV’s original series Trying just last year. On the soundtrack, she worked side-by-side with another British artist, James Bay.

Peters has written so much beautiful music, one of the most famous being her 2018 single “Worst of You” with over ninety-seven million streams on Spotify. The British singer-songwriter began her music pursuit in 2015 after opening a Youtube channel where she posted videos of song covers. In 2017 she began to officially release her own music but the year afterward she signed with Atlantic Records UK once gaining a small amount of popularity. Her fans range from famous celebrities to the ordinary “Emo Girl Pop” listener, she describes as her musical genre.

Peters also toured the U.S. in 2019 where she had close interactions with her fans. Most of her venues were small but held intimate sessions of music where she openly sang to every member of the audience. At the time, she wanted to have close connections with her fans. Some described her personally waving goodbye and signing free posters to every audience member. Since then, her fanbase is known as a tight community of listeners of all ages who relate to her heartfelt music. In an interview with BBC, she talked about her stage presence and connection with her audience: “It’s something I built up through busking and pub gigs. Those were so formative in learning about stagecraft – but also about how people don’t have to listen to you. They have all the rights in the world to walk past and not even look. So you have to make sure you’ve got something to say, so that people stick around.”

Peters also spoke on her opportunity to work with Ed Sheeran. She even claimed her new album would be a summary of her life’s work, though she confessed to working on it consistently throughout 2020. Sheeran is also a co-writer on her soon-to-be-released single called “Psycho”. While describing the writing process with him she said, “He’s so fast! And luckily I’m pretty fast too, because you have to keep up. He’s insanely skilled at getting to the point of the song, and it’s inspiring to be in the same room as him.” She also talked about the new single saying that, “The song feels like Abba to me, which I’m obsessed with. Everything is so sharp and concise, and I think that’s what makes a perfect pop song.” But that’s not all. Peters has also gained recognition from other amazing artists like Taylor Swift and JP Saxe.

Everyone from her fans to new listeners, to even major artists are expecting great things from Peters in the future. At 21 she has accomplished more than so many others her age. The record deal and collaboration can help her rise as one of today’s next big pop artists. So many of the connections she has made and skills she learned while touring and writing music will help her become an even more talented singer-songwriter than she is today.
