A new documentary on the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, is now streaming on Amazon Prime. The nostalgic documentary gives fans a look back on her 1994 album, My Life.

Blige’s album My Life was not only one of her most popular but also her most personal project she has ever put out. The album was inspired by her experiences with abusive relationships, clinical depression, and struggles with drugs and alcohol addiction.

The Yonkers native was 19 years old when she got her first big break with Uptown Records, where they produced her first hit, “What’s The 411?.” However, it was not until her second album, My Life, that Blige felt she had her breakthrough as an artist due to being in an abusive relationship and learning how to cope with her new status.

Blige admitted that it was difficult to even enjoy her newfound fame since her ex-boyfriend at the time was both physically and verbally abusive towards her while she recorded.

The songstress utilized those experiences to produce relatable, vulnerable, and honest tracks. “I had no idea that I could touch people with my own pain,” Mary told ET on the red carpet of the premiere of her documentary. “It made me say you know what? Let’s move forward, let’s move onward and upward you know?”

Now, 27 years after its initial release, fans of Blige are being re-inspired by My Life following the release of the new Prime documentary.

The heart-touching documentary was directed by Vanessa Roth and also discussed Blige’s struggles during her childhood growing up in the projects in Yonkers, NY.

Don’t miss Mary J. Blige’s My Life which is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
