Mack joined NXIVM in 2010 when she was only 26 years old. In 2017, The New York Times exposed the ‘self-help organization’ for sex slavery and trafficking. Subsequent arrests and investigations came after.
Last October, NXIVM leader Keith Raniere was sentenced to 120 years in prison on racketeering and sex trafficking charges. Mack worked closely with Raniere at NXIVM but received a lesser sentence for providing evidence during the leader’s trial.

“I am sorry to those of you that I brought into Nxivm,” Mack wrote in a letter to the court. “I do not take lightly the responsibility I have in the lives of those I love, and I feel a heavyweight of guilt for having misused your trust, leading you down a negative path.”
Despite her remorse, Mack ran the DOS, a secret society within NXIVM in which women were allegedly treated as sex slaves. The women were stripped and tied down as they got branded with Raniere’s initials that resembled some perverted ritual.

Women who joined had to offer up ‘collateral,’ which included anything from explicit photos and videos to private confessions that encouraged obedience. Mack’s role was to recruit these women and send them to Raniere, who was viewed as their ‘sex master.’

Mack used her high-profile status to recruit fellow actresses and celebrities. Smallville costar Kristin Kreuk joined NXIVM around the same time as Mack but left soon after. Meanwhile, a Tweet that resurfaced from 2016 shows Mack inviting Emma Watson into her ‘women’s movement.’
“I was just thinking about all the collateral that they had on me and, like, well, what was I going to do? I needed to get out of this situation, and what are they going to do with my collateral?” Actress Jessica Joan stated in court, according to CNN. She detailed both sexy and unflattering photos sent to Mack and Raniere each month. “Kind of like rent… the first of every month.”

Jessica Jones (who identified herself in court) called Mack an “evil monster,” saying she was “clear and calculated” in her actions.

Mack had been under house recent and on bail for $5 million preceding her court date. Between attending therapy sessions and working towards a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley, she is hoping to change her life around. On September 29, Mack will turn herself into authorities, where she will serve her sentence at a California state prison to remain near her family.
As details from NXVIM and DOS came to light, many were shocked at the horrific conditions these women were put through. The sex cult has come under criminal investigation for sexual abuse to trafficking, mutilation, and more.
