On July 1, Refinery29’s community called Unbothered posted an exclusive interview with Grammy-winning singer Tiara Thomas on their Instagram. In the interview, the 31-year-old American singer-songwriter discusses her passion for music growing up, supporting Black women in the music industry, and more.

Since a young age, Tiara Thomas has always had a passion for music. In elementary school and middle school, the singer made beats with a pencil at her lunch table or played on her first owned guitar. At the age of twelve, Thomas already had her mind on winning a Grammy. After talking through her childhood, a clip of Thomas playing her guitar at a younger age singing, “This is for my exes. I wrote a song for y’all. And I hope you like it,” appeared.

The singer then explained her first time working with Wale, a 36-year-old American rapper. During her college years, Thomas flew out to work in a studio with him to create a song named “The Cloud” and later on, a popular one called “Bad.” Always finding ways to connect with others in music, Thomas also co-wrote a song with H.E.R. called “I Can’t Breathe,” which won a Grammy award for Song of the Year.

Equally important in the interview, the singer-songwriter opened up about facing difficulties being a Black woman in the music industry and everyday life. The 31-year-old singer-songwriter explained, “I feel like being a Black woman is hard, in general. You know, just in a regular world.” Thomas then sent out a message stating, “Black women in this industry, we have to stick together.” She continued, “We have to uplift each other,” emphasizing the need to support and encourage one another.
