Viola Davis, an Academy Award-winning actress, has announced that she will be releasing her very own memoir titled Finding Me. HarperOne, which is an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers, also confirmed the news.

On July 20, Viola Davis has shared that she is both “excited” and “terrified” to share her story. The memoir will cover an array of subjects ranging from her early childhood in Rhode Island, her education at Julliard, her impressive acting career, co-finding JuVee Productions, activism, philanthropy, and family life. She will also share the many obstacles she had faced, such as the overt discrimination in Hollywood for being a Black woman.

Davis has recently made history as the most nominated Black woman in history. Although this is quite an accomplishment, Davis spoke to Variety and felt much different. She revealed, “For me, it’s a reflection of the lack of opportunities and access to opportunities people of color have had in this business. If me, going back to the Oscars four times in 2021, makes me the most nominated Black actress in history, that’s a testament to the sheer lack of material there has been out there for artists of color.” Despite making history for portraying jazz icon Ma Rainey, Davis hopes that playing these powerful women will honor the life and legacy of all the Black women that came before her.

Davis’ career catapulted after being cast as Annalise Keating in the legal drama series How To Get Away with Murder. After six seasons and a history-making Emmy win in 2015, Davis proved to be a force in the industry. While it has been great to be honored, Davis takes the time to speak out on important issues such as diversity and inclusivity for Black women in entertainment.

Fans have taken to social media to share their excitement over Davis’ memoir, Finding Me.

We could not be more excited to read Davis’ memoir, Finding Me. The book promises to be a raw and inspiring story. Finding Me will be released on April 19, 2022. You can pre-order here.
