Lorde Revisits Her Roots With New Single ‘Stoned At The Nail Salon’
Ahead of the summer release of her highly anticipated album Solar Power, Lorde teases a second track from the record, and fans can not contain their joy.
“Stoned At The Nail Salon” was made to be the next release on her website on July 19, the song’s title displayed in bold letters with the date July 21 settled underneath.
Fan reaction for her hiatus-breaking single “Solar Power” brought mixed reviews. Most were comforted by the positive shift from her usual melancholic lyrics; others were unsure how to adjust to the new era.
This track will definitely scratch that itch for those aching for the vibes found in the artist’s previous discography.
The lyrics touch on the passage of time and how eventually–no matter how hard it is to allow it– we must accept the things that will inevitably come to pass.

She proceeds to make grand statements about the truths of life she must face, and the phrase “maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon again” is placed as a dismissal of sorts.
The singer uses that repetition as an attempt to remove some of the weight her words carry, as people under the influence tend to ramble about the deep and philosophical.

The single can be best described as “Ribs“‘ older sister, the iconic track from her first studio album touching on similar themes regarding growing up and getting old.
In her recent email to fans following the song’s reveal, the artist proceeds to speak on the feeling she wished to captivate in its four minutes and 27-second runtime:
“I was starting to fall out of step with the times culturally, I didn’t have my finger firmly on the pulse for the first time in my life, and I could feel the next round of precocious teenagers starting to come up, and I felt insecure that they were gonna eat my lunch, so to speak. Was I over the hill?!! This song was borne out of that feeling.”
She will hold the live debut of the single alongside co-writer and producer Jack Antonoff on Late Night with Seth Myers on July 21.
Lorde’s third studio album Solar Power will release August 20 on all streaming platforms.
