Jack Whitehall Opens up About MacGregor’s Coming-Out Scene in New Film ‘Jungle Cruise’
Variety’s Culture and Events Senior Editor Marc Malkin interviewed Jack Whitehall and discussed MacGregor’s coming-out scene in Jungle Cruise. The 33-year-old actor opened up about the significant scene on the red carpet in Disneyland for the movie’s premiere.
On the red carpet, Marc Malkin enthusiastically stated, “We got to talk about MacGregor being gay.” This led to Whitehall responding with, “When I first read the script, there was only like a couple of sides.” Then, Whitehall clarified that there were no hints that the character MacGregor Houghton was gay.

Malkin followed up by asking why MacGregor does not explicitly use the word “gay” when coming out. In uncertainty, Whitehall explained, “I don’t know, I think you might have to ask Michael Green that question,” referring to Jungle Cruise’s screenplay writer. The actor continued by expressing how he believes it is a “significant scene” and “really well-written.” Additionally, Whitehall stated that the coming-out scene was “thought about and talked about a lot.”
#JungleCruise was so fun! Too much CGI for my taste, but a great adventure movie filled with laughs. Emily Blunt is so cool, it hurts, and The Rock is adorable. Jesse Plemmons as a goofy Disney villain is a REVELATION. Now give me a sequel so Jack Whitehall can get a boyfriend.

In Jungle Cruise, Jack Whitehall plays MacGregor Houghton, who is the brother of Lily Houghton. During the movie, MacGregor reveals to Frank Skipper that he broke off three engagements with women. Whitehall’s character does not directly use the word “gay,” but MacGregor explains that his “interests happily lay elsewhere.” After, MacGregor explains that Lily “stood by” him when his family did not support him because of who he “loved.”
This was INSANE! Can’t wait for you to see it! https://t.co/GezShfUrcv
