‘The Sopranos’ Creator David Chase Discusses New Movie ‘The Many Saints of Newark’
David Chase, the creator of the drama series The Sopranos, is ready for the release of a new movie called The Many Saints of Newark. Set around the time of the 1967 Newark riots, the movie is a prequel to Chase’s Golden Globe awarded drama series.
A few years ago, David Chase began thinking of revisiting the characters in The Sopranos. Once Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich brought up the idea of exploring the characters in the 1999 series, Chase knew it would happen.
I have the highest hopes for The Many Saints of Newark. It will not fail.

Now, Chase is helping release The Many Saints of Newark, which is a more than two-hour movie focusing on Dickie Moltisanti, the father of Christopher. The Sopranos creator wanted to explore a character that would have the complexity of Tony but would be interesting in a different way. According to Vanity Fair, after the 1967 Newark riots, Dickie Moltisanti “winds up at war with a former associate.” In reference to the movie, The Sopranos creator clarified, “I just had this sneaking suspicion that the DNA was going to be the same.”
Chase experienced the 1967 Newark riots when he was only 22 years old. In his Vanity Fair interview, the 76-year-old screenwriter explained stories about taking his wife to a job in Prudential Insurance company, located in Newark, where he witnessed the riots. After experiencing the Newark riots and seeing the Black Lives Matter marches last year, Chase explained that he was shocked how nothing has changed.
No question, in 2021 the movie I’m looking forward to the most is The Many Saints of Newark. I’m telling you.
