Hudson has long been a fan of Franklin, having sung her song “Share Your Love with Me” during her American Idol audition in Season 3. After a unanimous vote, all three judges sent her through, knowing she had something truly special. It is anything but easy to cover an Aretha Franklin song, but Hudson proved in her audition as a 21-year-old that she was ready to be a singer.

Hudson revealed that The Queen of Soul herself handpicked her to portray her in a biopic. She tells Live With Kelly and Ryan that she received a call from the legend herself while doing The Color Purple. Franklin was adamant about Hudson portraying her and told her not to tell a single soul. Hudson calls this the “ultimate dream and honor.” She has certainly felt all the emotions and pressures of playing her, such as anxiety or fears, but she also has faith, something she learned from Franklin.
