The Remarkable Carli Lloyd Announces Retirement
Carli Lloyd ends her journey as an Olympic athlete after 16 years of hard work.
She first began her soccer career in July of 2005, where her main goal was to help her team win championships. It is evident that every time she stepped out onto the field, she played as if it was her last game. Inevitability, her mindset led her to accomplish so much success in her long career.
Lloyd was known for her passion and dedication to the sport, living for the big moments on the field. As she furthered her career in soccer, her journey had many obstacles that had taken place. She was told at 21 that she wasn’t good enough; however, her relentless work ethic on the field allowed her to go to the Olympics with her team and win two gold medals and go to the World Cup.
#ThankYouCarli There will never be another like Carli and I hate to loose her off the USWNT but I understand her need to retire. She is such a class act on and off the field. She has made such a mark on women’s soccer that will be felt for years to come. Thank you Carli!— Suzy The Elf aka Elfie (@Suzy_aka_Elfie) August 16, 2021
She ranks second on the national teams’ all-time list with 312 games and fourth with 128 goals. Additionally, she assisted 64 goals. She is known for her three goals, all in 16 minutes, leading the United States to a 5-2 victory over Japan in the 2015 World Cup final, and her third goal in that match was a strike from midfield.
