Serena Williams Opens up About Managing Migraine Attacks in New Interview
In an exclusive interview with Refinery29, Serena Williams opens up about the migraines she has been battling throughout her adult life. Additionally, the 39-year-old tennis player filmed a commercial with UBRELVY to promote the prescription migraine medicine.
In the interview, Williams told Refinery29 that she has been dealing with migraine attacks for most of her adult life. The tennis star explained, “In the past, I would get about two migraine attacks per month. There’s a lot of stuff to do, my tennis career, [being] a mom, [my] various business ventures. And I think stress has a lot to do with it.”
It’s remarkable because I used to watch you play and I could tell there was something you were working through, but I never knew it was migraines. I could not imagine playing tennis at your level, Queen Champion with migraines, but then that’s why God blessed U2b, Queen Champion.

Recently, Black women athletes such as Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles have been taking a step back from their careers to focus on their mental and physical health. Williams is doing the same by settings boundaries and learning when to say “no.” Williams stated, “I think systematically women, in general, are always taught just to deal with it and it’ll be okay.” The tennis star continued, “I never stopped. I’m always, always pushing through, but when it comes to this, it just came to a point where I couldn’t push through anymore.”

Now, Williams has collaborated with UBRELVY, a prescribed branded treatment for migraine attacks in adults. The tennis star created an advertisement with the brand to promote the medicine that worked for her. In the ad, Williams is seen holding her head in pain while in a meeting, but after taking the migraine treatment, the tennis star is shown working hard at a fashion show.
