On Monday, August 23, country and pop star Kacey Musgraves announced that her new album Star-Crossed and an accompanying film would be available on September 10 on Paramount Plus. She described the album on her Instagram account as “a modern tragedy told in three acts.”

Musgraves also released the title song, “Star-Crossed.” Spotify tweeted the news, telling listeners to “stock up on tissues.”

The album was produced and co-written by Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, the duo behind Musgraves’s last album, Golden Hour. The film component of the album will include appearances from stars such as Eugene Levy, Victoria Pedretti, Symone, and Megan Stalter. Symone retweeted the movie trailer on Monday.

The “Rainbow” singer sat down for an interview with Zane Lowe. The interview is part of Apple Music’s New Music Daily series and was released on August 20. Lowe comments that the record had a “cinematic feel to it,” and Musgraves adds that while there are many country aspects to Star-Crossed, her influences give her new music elements of different genres.

She also discusses how personal Star-Crossed is for her, explaining, “I want the chance to transform my trauma into something else, and I want to give myself that opportunity even if it’s painful.” She added that she did not want to give only a “highlight reel” of her life. She says, “You saw my highlight reel with Golden Hour, and this is the other side of that.”

The album is available for preorder on Musgraves’s website. Check out the official lyric video for the new song “Star-Crossed” below:
