The Wonder Years (2021) changes the narrative by centering around a black family living in Montgomery, Ala. The show follows 12-year-old Dean Williams (Elisha Williams) as he grows up during this transformational period. Meanwhile, Don Cheadle will narrate the show.

“It’s weird to grow up in a time when your mom and dad have to give you the police talk, or when a presidential election creates a racial divide,” Cheadle says in the trailer. “But it was 1968, the year I turned 12. The age of locker rooms, bullies … and girls.”

“We want to really take the opportunity to show a part of Black, middle-class life that had not been seen before,” creator and executive producer Saladin K. Patterson shared, according to Variety. Usually, when you talk about the late ’60s, it’s talking about the struggle in the civil rights movement and things like that, that are very valid and a part of our story as well.”

Williams is joined Laura Kariuki, Dulé Hill, and Saycon Sengbloh who play his on-screen family. Other actors include Milan Ray, Amari O’Neil, Julian Lerner.
