Tian Richards Nabs Lead Role in New ‘Nancy Drew’ Spin-off ‘Tom Swift’
Fans of the CW mystery series Nancy Drew have something big to look forward to this fall with the news of Tian Richards’ spin-off, Tom Swift. The show, which began development in October 2020, has been given the green light and is set to premiere during the 2021-2022 broadcast season, although no official date has been released.

Richards first appeared as Tom in the Nancy Drew series at the end of the second season. His debut episode, which can be found here, also serves as a backdoor pilot for the upcoming standalone series.

The character of Tom Swift has been around for a long time, he’s been appearing in novels since 1910, but this is the first time his likeness is taking the spotlight on screen. The series will follow Swift, a “titular Black, gay, billionaire inventor,” as he explores a world of conspiracy and illusion after his father suddenly disappears. He leaves behind his life of luxury to find the truth and unravel the mystery as he battles against an all-knowing force determined to stop him.
This announcement marks a huge milestone for the network and TV in general. Richards commented that with this new adaptation, it’s important that Swift has been reinvented as “someone like me — a Black guy who is chocolate, who is queer, who is all those things that we’re told aren’t the normal or the status quo.” Viewers are thrilled with the vision for the show, and for many, it is a call that has finally been answered.
