Eclectic Maryland rapper Rico Nasty showcased her versatility and personal flair in her NPR Tiny Desk concert this week, with all the comforts of home and a rockin’ girl band to back her up. Although this is Rico’s first time gracing the Tiny Desk stage so to speak, her performance is nothing short of what one would expect from the star.

Rico, styled in a silver braided mullet and blingy layered necklaces, starts the concert off with a groovy rendition of her new single, “Magic.” It’s unusual that the rapper shows off her more melodic side, but she croons alongside the band with raspy vocals and a soulful look in her eyes.

“What’s up guys, my name is Rico Nasty. I’m so excited to be here with you guys. I’ve always wanted to do one of these. We’ve got an all-girl band. We ’bout to rock out. Let’s go!” the rapper says as she takes center stage, accompanied only by a microphone, and flips the script on the Tiny Desk we all know and love.

From there the stripped-down, mellow mood vanishes and is replaced with Rico’s signature punk-rock attitude. The band, who are all wearing coordinated red outfits, jump to life as she begins a medley of her songs “Rage,” “OHFR?,” and “Trust Issues.” Rico is truly in her element here, jumping around the stage, almost having a conversation with the camera, as the set-list finishes with her breakout hit “Smack a B*tch.”

The authenticity and energy of her performance are refreshing, and some of her biggest attributes as a musician and celebrity. Fans praise Rico for always staying true to her character and for breaking the box in every possible way.
