Today we are met with the good news that Britney Spears is now free. Jamie Spears filed to end conservatorship over his daughter, giving up control over her life.

In the Hulu documentary Framing Britney Spears, which aired earlier this year, we discovered the true side of the pop star’s life. Spears was deemed mentally ill and incapable of caring for herself, assets, and children.

Jamie Spears, her father who was absent for most of her childhood, came back into the picture in 2009 and filed to become Britney Spears’ conservator. This gave him free rein over every aspect of her life, including whether or not she could get married or have children. Jamie Spears was in charge of her medical care, therapy plans, financials, and personal relationships.

Jamie Spears or the court decided every step of Britney Spears’s life. All while being silenced to project a happy life to her fans. Britney Spears would often post Instagram videos, alleging hints about her abuse. The #FreeBritney movement expanded, and fans investigated each post and caption to help the 39-year-old reach justice.

Britney Spears attempted to remove her father from conservatorship twice in the past few years, threatening not to perform as long as her father has control. However, if Britney Spears did not comply with her father’s demands, she would be denied visitation with her two children.

Britney Spears explained that her father purposely ruined her life to see her in pain under his control. The father-daughter relationship turned into an abusive relationship with monetary benefits. Lynn Spears, Britney’s mother, also spoke about the abuse. However, Jamie Spears denies all allegations.

In addition, Jamie Spears authorized a “sports enhancement” doctor to treat Britney Spears with medication she didn’t consent to. Britney and her family believed the medication was not necessary. However, Jamie Spears argued he knew best.

Britney Spears hired a new attorney, Mathew Rosengart, to remove Jamie Spears and replace him with a professional accountant. Rosengart argued that Jamie Spears is not a valid conservator given his misuse of her finances.

Jamie Spears denies all allegations of abuse and coercion in his file. Instead, he emphasizes the work he has done to get Britney Spears through her dark period.

The file explains, “If the public knew all the facts of Ms. Spears’ personal life…all the addiction and mental health issues…and all of the challenges of the Conservatorship, they would praise Mr. Spears for the job he has done, not vilify him.”

Jamie Spears will terminate the conservatorship after noting the situation changed for Brittney Spears in her ability to handle herself. There will also be a court hearing to press charges for conservator abuse against Jamie Spears on September 29th.

Regardless of Jamie Spears’ denial of abuse, the end of his control and conservatorship is a win for Britney and all the supporters of #FreeBritney.

So, if you’ve been a supporter of the movement online or in-person at the protests, enjoy that cake and then some because Britney Spears is finally free.
