This Year’s Most Out Of The Box VMA Red Carpet Moments
Last night’s VMA Awards were awash with designer and couture, some attendees chose to honor the time-old tradition of stepping outside the norm to pay homage to fashions past and future with their daring looks. 2020s socially distanced show had to forgo its typical red carpet, so there was lost time to be made up for, and the message was certainly received. Most of these celebs contributed to the event in more ways than one, but their red carpet moments are what truly stole the show.
- Bretman Rock
Youtube sensation and social media influencer Bretman Rock donned an archival Cavalli slip that originally dressed superstar Aaliyah back when she won Best Female Music Video at the 2000 VMA awards. Rock kept the accessories to a minimum, letting the slinky tiger-striped number speak for itself, complementing the look with a simple pair of vinyl boots and what has become his signature curly mullet. He acknowledged and thanked the late singer in a heartfelt post he shared via Instagram.
2. Tinashe
2 On singer Tinashe had everyone feeling nostalgic with her nod to the ’00 era and Christina Aguilera’s Dirrty. The leather set was comprised of vintage Dolce and Gabanna pants, and a vintage top that showed off the songstress and dancer’s toned physique. She commented that the whole point of the ensemble was to give “I don’t care, but at the same time, I absolutely care because I look bomb” and it’s safe to say she succeeded. Tinashe also acted as a celebrity correspondent for the VMAs pre-show alongside co-hosts Nessa Diab and Jamila Mustafa.

3. Doja Cat
Hostess extraordinaire Doja Cat proved herself to be a triple threat at this year’s award show, and that she has a great sense of style to boot. Her sexy Vivienne Westwood ensemble left little to the fashion imagination, pushing the envelope with a structured corset and tasteful draping. She, of course, wouldn’t be caught dead without her signature Planet Her baby hair swoop, and she added chunky, eclectic jewelry to balance out the refined silhouette of the outfit. Her aerial on-stage performance was accompanied by a live orchestra and left the audience applauding her ingenuity and always consistent showmanship.
4. Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X has yet to disappoint fans with his bold and beautiful sense of style, and Sunday’s red carpet was no exception. Strutting in Atelier Versace the “Old Town Road” rapper looked pretty in purple, with lilac boots to match. The pastel pantsuit turned heads and contrasted perfectly with Nas’ grungey mullet hair-do. He and fellow rapper Jack Harlow delivered an electric performance of their song “Industry Baby,” medlied with Nas’ chart-topper “Montero,” which won the award for Video of the Year.
5. Charli XCX
Charli XCX, who hails from Cambridge, England, has been a driving force in the PC Music scene for years, but most recently she’s been catching the eye of critics at NYFW, and it seems her fondness for style doesn’t stop there. Charli wore a lacy black dress from Shawna Wu and towering patent leather Louboutins. She looked like a true rockstar babe with her beehived mane of curls and smokey cat-eye makeup, very much channeling a 1960’s Priscilla Presley. But perhaps best of all was her ‘wet-look’ manicure and unusual silver bracelet, both of which helped to tip the look into complete coherency. The singer also joined the reputable list of presenters for the evening.

6. SAINt JHn
New York native SAINt JHN walked the red carpet last night in head-to-toe Chanel and looked so effortlessly cool while doing so if you didn’t already know who this sultry rapper was, you’re sure to know now. The classic Chanel tweed suit has undergone a few masculine modifications for the occasion, although it remains in its iconic pink hue, and is paired with a selection of necklaces and plain black frames. SAINt JHn also managed to make time to snag three Moonmen awards and perform his hit song “Roses” for an adoring crowd on the Extended Play Stage.
7. Avril Lavigne
Canadian pop-rock singer Avril Lavigne hasn’t been seen at a VMA awards show since 2003, so it’s understandable why she made such a splash on the red carpet this past weekend. For her glamourous return, Lavigne sported a punk-chic pink plaid suit designed by Area and a Cristahlea bandeau top. She is accessorized with a glittery Jimmy Choo bag and extravagant earrings, contrasting with boyfriend Mod Sun’s darker, more boyishly grunge look in perfect eccentricity. Fans are obsessing over that this may be an indication of a more permanent return to the public for the star.
