HBO Max’s ‘Genera+ion’ Will Not Return for a New Season
HBO Max series Genera+ion will not get a second season. Produced by Lena Dunham and written by Zelda Barnz and her father, Daniel Barnz, this coming-of-age series (entitled Genera+ion) won’t be returning for another season, HBO Max said in a statement.
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Genera+ion. We are very proud to have partnered with Zelda and Daniel Barnz to faithfully and authentically represent LGBTQ youth with such a diverse group of characters and layered stories. We thank them and our wonderfully gifted cast for all their hard work and collaboration.”

Genera+ion follows a group of LGBTQ teenagers navigating teenagehood and tackling modern problems: sexuality, love, and life while living in a conservative community. The first season consists of sixteen half-hour-long episodes that debuted in March, and the show wrapped up in July. Zelda wanted the show to be a voice for Gen Z, being a member of the generation herself. The eighteen-year-old writer’s other father and Daniel’s husband, Ben Barnz, explained where the idea was created.
“This came from Zelda, this was her idea.” Ben explained. It came from stories she started to tell us about her gender and sexuality that were poignant and funny. We suggested that she write them down, and we thought it would make an interesting TV show… but we really didn’t think it was gonna get made.”
#Generation being cancelled is legit so heartbreaking! The show was such an amazing coming of age story about a group of friends touching on really important issues. Ugh RIP to another fantastic LGBTQ themed show. pic.twitter.com/f2S9BuufZV
