The Queen’s Gambit cast had a big night at the Emmys. The critically acclaimed hit miniseries took home eleven awards and was nominated for eighteen. Some of the awards include best-limited series and outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie. Executive producer William Horberg accepted the award on the show’s behalf, thanking fans and praising Anya Taylor-Joy.

Producer William Horberg stated, “The one thing that no algorithm can predict, and no billion-dollar budget can manufacture, is word of mouth. This award is for the fans who told their friends, and who became fans, who told their friends: ‘Dude, you got to watch the orphan girl chess drama.'”

“Thank you to Netflix, you guys did the rarest thing of all these days. You took a chance on risky material and you trusted the filmmakers. Anya Taylor-Joy, what can I say, you brought the sexy back to chess, and you inspired a whole generation of girls and young women to realize that patriarchy simply has no defense against our queens,” shared Horberg.

While answering questions from the media, the queen herself, Taylor-Joy discussed how popular the series has become, and how many age groups enjoy it.

“From people in their 80s saying that it was the first show that they’d ever binge-watched to teenagers saying that they were gonna play the hot guy at their school at chess, that was pretty spectacular,” Taylor-Joy shared.

Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, The Queen’s Gambit is set in the 1950s, following the journey of twenty-year-old orphan chess prodigy Elizabeth “Beth” Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy). While battling alcoholism and addiction, the young woman strives to be the elite chess player in a male-dominated industry. Filled with raw emotions, this must-see show is a hit amongst all age groups. The Queen’s Gambit can be streamed on Netflix.
