The new version of The Little Mermaid has a release date. Fans can embark on an adventure through the sea on May 23, 2023.

The cast includes Halle Bailey as Ariel the adventurous mermaid herself, Melissa McCarthy as the wicked sea witch Ursula, Javier Bardem as Ariel’s father and King of Atlantica King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Triton’s advisor Sebastian, Akwafina as one of Ariel’s best friends Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay Ariel’s other best friend Flounder, and Jonah Hauer-King as Ariel’s handsome love interest Prince Eric.

Bailey snagged the role back in 2019. Being Ariel has been a dream come true for the young actress. However, the pandemic was a setback for the film’s production. Despite the challenges, Bailey loved playing the princess of the sea. In July, Bailey posted a picture on Instagram in her bikini top and fins laying in the ocean and wrote:

“I feel so grateful to have experienced this film in all of its glory. It has been the toughest experience being away from everything and everyone I’ve ever known, to feeling self-doubt/ loneliness, but also feeling such freedom and perseverance as I’ve reached the end. This experience has made me so much stronger than I ever thought I could be.”

Based on the 1989 film, The Little Mermaid’s live-action will stay true to the original story, following the rebellious sixteen-year-old mermaid named Ariel. She’s interested in life above the sea, fascinated with humans, and yearning to be among them. Against her father’s commands, she falls in love with a human. To be with the man she fell for, she makes a dangerous deal with Ursula, the sea witch, trading her fins and voice for legs. Ariel has three days to make her prince fall in love with her, or else she will never have her voice returned to her.

The original film is based on an 1837 fairytale by Hans Christan Andersen. Rob Marshall directs the live-action movie (Pirates of the Caribbean). Lin-Manuel Miranda co-produced and wrote songs for the film. Alan Menken, who composed songs for the original film, is returning to compose the live-action film’s music. The original version of The Little Mermaid can be streamed on Disney+.
