Johnny Depp Believes No One Is Safe From Cancel Culture
Warning: This article mentions domestic abuse.
Johnny Depp attended the San Sebastian Film Festival on Wednesday where he received the honorary Donostia Award, given to a selection of filmmakers and performers each year.
Before receiving the award Depp was asked in a press conference what his thoughts were regarding cancel culture and the influence social media has on it.
Depp responded that “It’s a very complex situation.” He went on to describe the culture as an “instant rush to judgment, based on essentially what amounts to polluted air that is exhaled.”
He continued “No one is safe, not one of you… not anyone out that door. As long as someone is willing to say one sentence.”
The question was in regards to the May 2016 accusations brought against Depp by his ex-wife Amber Heard. The pair divorced in 2016 a year after getting married, Heard filed for divorce and obtained a temporary restraining order against Depp. She alleged that Depp physically abused her during their relationship.
A British newspaper, The Sun published an article stating that Depp was a “wife-beater.” He sued the paper but lost the libel suit in November, as the judge found that the claims against Depp being abusive toward Heard were “substantially true.”
Depp continued, “It’s not just me this has happened to. It’s happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men, and children who have suffered from various types of unpleasantries and they sadly, at a certain point, begin to think that it’s normal….”
The allegations led to Warner Bros. urging Depp to resign from his role in the Fantastic Beast series. Depp’s other recent film, Minamata, was put on hold.
