Mitski Releases New Song ‘Working for the Knife’
Mitski has made a surprise return to the music scene with her brand new single, “Working for the Knife.” This single is the first taste of new music fans have been given since 2018’s Be the Cowboy.
Mitski, the Japanese-American singer-songwriter, has shared her latest single, “Working for the Knife,” accompanied by a music video directed by Zia Anger. Patrick Hyland, Mitski’s frequent collaborator, produced the track.

Mitski began teasing her single only a day earlier, on October 4. The photo simply reads, “Mitski, October 5, 2021, 10:00 a.m. E.T.” The singer shared a shot from the music video, where her back is turned and she is waiting for the elevator to open. This message sent fans into a frenzy as they stormed social media to await the highly-anticipated return of the beloved artist.

Mitski would inevitably break the internet once more as she dropped her music video for “Working for the Knife.” She is seen to be embodying the cowboy, wearing a hat and spurs to complete the look. As the video progresses, fans can see Mitski dancing and collapsing as she uses all the space of The Egg stage. Fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the five-minute short film.

Mitski shared in a statement what “Working for the Knife” is about. She reveals, “It’s about going from being a kid with a dream to a grown-up with a job and feeling that somewhere along the way you got left behind. It’s being confronted with a world that doesn’t seem to recognize your humanity, and seeing no way out of it.” This is a heartbreaking message that hits home for fans.

As if a new single and accompanying music video wasn’t enough for fans, Mitski will also be embarking on a 2022 tour of North America, The UK/EU.
