Dalgona Candy From Hit Series ‘Squid Game’ Has Gone Viral
The new Korean Netflix original Series “Squid Game” is one of the most-watched series to date on the streaming service. The series centers around debt-ridden individuals who have the opportunity to play violent games for a chance to win a big lump sum of money. The rules are simple: win or die.
Throughout the series, there are a total of six games. The game that has caught the world by storm is the Dalgona candy game, where each player is given the candy with a shape imprinted on it: a triangle, circle, star, or umbrella. The players had to pick away at the edges of the candy without cracking the shape.
Dalgona candy, known as “ppopgi” in South Korea, is a traditional sweet sold by Korean vendors; it is made by heating up brown sugar, baking soda, and corn syrup.
Although the ingredients list for the famous candy is short, it seems that it is not as easy to make. The process consists of slowly heating the sugar and adding a pinch of baking soda to give it the caramel look.
Multiple Tik Toks have since been posted of people attempting to make the candy. Fans of the series took to social media attempting to make the candy, but most were not successful on their first try.
The candy had lost its popularity, and in the early 2000s, vendors started to disappear because of newer inexpensive candies.
The popularity of “Squid Games” has brought the candy back to life, and vendors are popping back up not only in South Korea but in parts of the United States as well. Vendors have experienced a huge rise in sales since the release of the show.
Fans of the series took to social media to see if they would be able to survive the game; the results showed that it is not as easy as it looks.
While Squid Game can’t be credited for the invention of the sweet concoction, the show can be lauded for reigniting interest in them. The dalgona craze also emphasizes the reach of Squid Game. The show really will stay with you, one way or the other. Stream the thrilling hit show on Netflix.
