Anya Taylor-Joy Delivers Stunning Rendition of ‘Downtown’ in New Film ‘Last Night in Soho’
Is there anything Anya Taylor-Joy can’t do? The Queen’s Gambit breakout star delivered a hauntingly beautiful rendition of “Downtown” for her latest film, Last Night in Soho.
Anya Taylor-Joy proved to the world that she has a hidden talent: singing. The talented actress lends her vocals to the soundtrack for Last Night in Soho, the British psychological horror film directed by Edgar Wright. The film follows the story of Eloise Turner (Thomasin McKenzie), an aspiring fashion designer who magically gets transported into 1960s London. Eloise meets Sandie (Taylor-Joy), a blonde bombshell singer who becomes Eloise’s 60s idol.
On Wednesday, October 20, Taylor-Joy took to Instagram to share her moody cover of “Downtown,” the 1965 hit song by Petula Clark. The actress writes, “It’s not every day you’re asked to record several versions of an iconic song. The sounds of the 60s was what first made me fall in love with music so I was overjoyed when Edgar asked me to give it a go. Please enjoy “Downtown (Downtempo)” from the #LastNightInSoho soundtrack.” Fans are certainly enjoying Taylor-Joy’s take on such a popular sixties song. Who knew that Anya Taylor-Joy could sing so beautifully?
The video shows Taylor-Joy in a recording studio while clips from the movie play over her singing. At just twenty-five, the actress has already made herself a household name, starring in films Split (2016) and Emma (2020). Arguably her biggest role to date is the chess prodigy, Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit. She picked up an Emmy nomination and Golden Globe win for her role in the hit Netflix show.
Anya Taylor-Joy has left fans speechless over her reimagining of a 60s staple. The actress reveals that she hopes to release music one day, and fans will undoubtedly be lining up to get their copies. Last Night in Soho will be available to watch in theaters on October 29. Fans can watch both the trailer to the psychological thriller and Taylor-Joy’s vocals above.
