E.R Fightmaster Is ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ New Non-binary Doctor
E.R Fightmaster joins the cast of Grey’s Anatomy as the show’s first non-binary doctor, Kai Bartley. The character was first introduced on October 7 during the second episode of season 18, “Some Kind of Tomorrow.”
Kai was one of the doctors working on a research team at a Minnesota hospital where Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) considered working.
Amelia recognized Kai for their work, and both characters had chemistry, leading viewers to speculate whether a romance is possible for the doctors.
Shondaland, the production company behind the series, described Fightmaster’s character as “They are dedicated to their craft and extremely talented at what they do. Confident as hell and able to make even the most detailed and mundane science seem exciting and cool..”
The actor replied to Good Morning America’s tweet stating, “Ok, I’m blushing!”

Fightmaster also reposted Variety’s article on their role in the show after news broke out, captioning it, “I am having so much fun.”
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Scorsone spoke about her character’s romantic life and how she is “ready for a call at any time,” as this might be the end of the show after 18 seasons. She also wishes Amelia’s story would wrap up when the time comes to say goodbye.
“She’s the queen of the universe. She’s so passionate about medicine and so passionate about neurosurgery that I would want her to have a huge win in that arena,” she said. “She’s brilliant, and she’s passionate, and seeing a woman excel, especially in neurosurgery – which typically has been a male-dominated profession – is something we need to see more of.”
As the show progresses, viewers will be able to see whether Amelia and Kai develop a romantic relationship as they work together.
Catch Grey’s Anatomy on Thursdays at 8:00 PM on ABC.
