Amazon finds 150,000 new employees in their FamilyFlex program that hires parents. In particular, parents who were laid off during the pandemic.

The FamilyFlex program offers flexible scheduling to help parents balance their work life and their family. Their schedule will be the same each week, making it easier to plan around their children’s schedules. Also, Amazon created “Anytime Shifts,” which allows employees to pick up any shift that fits their schedule best. Parents can also swap shifts with other employees to tend to family emergencies or last-minute appointments. In addition, Amazon included benefits such as pregnancy and parental paid leave, which is an issue being disputed in Congress at the moment.

Amazon says FamilyFlex aims to give back jobs, especially to mothers who have lost their jobs during the pandemic. Since the pandemic, employers have faced a decrease in their employees and need them fast. Specifically, Amazon needs employees fast, with holidays coming around the corner.

Amazon’s Vice President of Workforce Development, Ardine Williams, comments, “We know that the pandemic has had a tremendously disparate impact on women in the workforce. For us, as the second-largest employer in the U.S., this is really worrisome.”

Most companies aim at the same goal as Amazon to hire more employees, which means they are creating more benefits to appeal to future employees. As a result, Amazon boosted their starting wage to $18 an hour and provided free tuition for 750,000 employees. However, the gap remains in finding employees.

Williams adds that previous controversy about Amazon not allowing their employees a bathroom break was an unfortunate misunderstanding. Instead, she highlights that FamilyFlex offers jobs to “encourage these folks sitting on the sidelines to return to work.”

Amazon hopes to bridge the financial gap for parents and bridge the gap in the dwindling hiring process for their retail corporation. But, some are skeptical about this new program. Would you try it out?
