Salma Hayek Said She ‘Cried’ When Trying on New Marvel Costume
Famed actress Salma Hayek was overwhelmed with emotion after trying on her costume for the Marvel film Eternals. Known for various roles in hit movies, the Mexican actress holds this role dear to her heart.
Playing the role of Ajak, also known as Head Eternal in Charge, the actress not only gets to dominate the part but does it in a cute superhero outfit. Last month the actress posted a video of her upcoming film.
For many people over 50 years – old, being a superwoman is very uncommon. In an interview with Despierta America, the actress talks about how she felt when she saw her brown face in her costume. For people of color to be a dominant role in cinema is essential because of the unequal opportunities in the past. Hayek expresses that she wants little girls to look up to her, saying “…Seeing my face, I saw your face. I saw my face as a little girl, who had to have a lot of courage to dream big.” Hayek continued, “I saw the face of all the little girls…and I realized that a door had opened where I didn’t enter alone — but inside that suit were all the Latinos who waited so long for this moment.”
Salma Hayek playing the role of Ajak is a crucial part of history even though she is the third Latina Woman in a Marvel movie following Zoe Saldana and Tessa Thompson. In July of 2020, Tessa Thompson made a big deal to call for racial diversity in Marvel films. Thompson said, “The truth is these movies travel globally in such huge ways, and if you can represent people that are of color, if you can represent people with disabilities, if you can represent the LGBTQIA community inside of these films, it’s a pretty big deal.” For women of color, being present is not just a statement but an honor.
The new Marvel movie Eternals was released last Friday. The movie is about a race of immortal humans placed on earth to protect the human race from Deviants. The exciting new film is one of three movies since the last heartbreaking movie, Endgame. After Endgame, many Marvel fans were sad by the loss of the character Tony Stark.
