Almost 40 years after the release of the original Ghostbusters film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife picks up in the present, where ghosts have returned to wreak havoc on humanity. In the most recent trailer released on November 8, we see Paul Rudd’s character, Mr. Grooberson, encounter some familiar ghouls from the original film.

But the callback to the 1984 classic doesn’t stop there. Although we cannot see their faces in the newest footage, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson are all listed as part of the film’s cast. The film hints at the trio reappearing at the end of the trailer when three figures emerge in the iconic ghostbusters suits, complete with a cheeky voiceover from Murray: “Hey. Have you missed us?”

On YouTube, the description of the official trailer delivers the same punch-line, and it’s safe to say that fans of the franchise have been responding with a resounding yes.

The upcoming film is set to hit theaters on November 19. It centers around Callie (played by Carrie Coon) and her two children, Trevor (played by Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (played by Mckenna Grace), as they move to a small Oklahoma town.

Without explicitly stating in the trailer, it’s heavily implied that the childrens’ grandfather is not Dr. Egon Spengler (played by the late Harold Ramis). In the recent footage, Phoebe says, “grandfather was a ghostbuster,” continuing that “something was coming, and he knew it.”

The theory is only further supported when we see Phoebe’s seen making a phone call later in the clip, with the answering voice responding, “Ray’s Occult.”

The reference was a pleasant surprise to fans as a callback to the bookstore Ray Stantz (played by Dan Aykroyd) ran in the original films.

With all the new easter eggs paying homage to the original films, including the latest trailer closing off on the original Ghostbusters theme song, fans of the franchise are enthusiastic about Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the future it’s setting up for the franchise.
