AMC+ has unveiled a minute-long trailer of Jodie Turner-Smith as Anne Boleyn. The three-part psychological thriller premieres on December 9.

Back in February, Queen & Slim actress Jodie-Turner Smith took to Instagram to reveal her latest project: starring as Anne Boleyn, one of Henry VIII’s wives. The actress captions the post, “Le Temps Viendra, Je Anne Boleyn” which translates to “The Time Will Come, I Anne Boleyn.” The photo Turner-Smith shared is one of sadness, as she’s dressed in all black with eyes of despair.

Eve Hedderwick Turner, the show’s writer, discussed in an interview with Radio Times the feminist viewpoint she wanted to focus on when reimagining the queen’s story. She reveals, “Immediately, the thing that struck me was that often, she’s a sort of bit player in the larger dynamics and story of the court. And I felt like this was an opportunity to really kind of focus in on her experience of what went on and really explore a subjective narrative, [to] just stick really close on her shoulder and see how frightening this sort of situation would have been from her point of view, and I guess a chance to shift focus and put the lens on her, [and] make her the protagonist in her own story.”

Although the trailer is a little over a minute long, fans can see the feminist lens Hedderwick Turner was passionate about getting across to viewers. In one moment, the king (Mark Stanley) grabs Boleyn’s (Turner-Smith) baby bump and tells her that their son “will be a great ruler.” Instead of agreeing with her husband, Boleyn replies, “You doubt our daughter has what it takes?” Boleyn is understandably protective of her daughter and struggles to survive the patriarchy.

While many fans are excited to see Turner-Smith in this new role, the actress admits in her Glamour issue that she was not surprised that she was met with such backlash for portraying a woman that is white. Instead of letting this get to her, she was committed to focusing on the bigger picture. She reveals, “I had just become a mother and that was what really jumped out at me, the story of Anne as a mother. I did know it would be something that people felt very passionately about, either in a positive or a negative way, because Anne is a human in history who people feel very strongly about. More than anything, I wanted to tell the human story at the centre of all of this.”

Jodie Turner-Smith will certainly deliver a memorable performance as Anne Boleyn. The trailer is available to watch above. Be sure to get your AMC+ subscription to watch the three-part psychological thriller.
